Where can I go cross country skiing?

You can virtually cross country ski anywhere with snow, but for a great experience visit a professional nordic center. These x-c ski areas offer well-groomed trails ranging from 10-150 km in length! The terrain ranges from flat to hilly and the areas are spread throughout North America. Professional instruction for all abilities and ages is available. The fun includes weekend events such as races and gourmet food tours, and they offer the best in rental ski equipment. For more information on trail conditions at these professional x-c ski areas, contact Cross Country Ski Areas Association at www.xcski.org. In addition to groomed ski centers, you can go "ski touring" (classical or "kick and glide" technique) on your local golf course, county, town, or state park trails, or even your own "back forty." Classical skiing also opens up Forest Service and BLM roads, backcountry trails, and terrain close to alpine ski areas. It's best to skate ski on the firmly packed trails of a nordic center, snowmobile trail, or even a couple of inches of snow on a well-frozen lake.

What are the different cross country ski techniques?

Classical or "traditional" and Skating are the two basic x-c techniques. Classic is the most well known and oldest style of x-c. You can classic on either groomed or un-groomed backcountry trails. In classic, your skis remain parallel and point in the direction of travel. You move yourself forward when the midsection of the ski contacts the snow during the "kick" phase. The sticky hard wax, klister, or waxless pattern on your ski resists your rearward kick, thus propelling you forward. Skate skiing is similar to in-line and ice skating; the skis are placed in a diagonal "V" across the trail to move forward. The entire base of a skate ski is smooth (like an alpine ski), meaning it requires neither kick wax nor a milled waxless pattern. Because you are mostly always gliding, the skate skiing is faster than classical, but it requires more energy! You are best advised to skate only on well-groomed trails or firmly packed snow.

What kind of an x-c skier am I?

Just ask yourself two questions: Where do I want to ski? How fast do I want to get there?

RACE/PERFORMANCE: Racing and training demands peak performance from the skis. RRS offers a variety of race skate or classic) skis to meet the needs of many different types of racers:
* Expert Skiers / Racers: The top-end racers, those that live for their sport and train hard year-round will look for the World Cup models we offer such as the Visu Pro Race, Fischer RCS, and Rossignol X-ium.
* School, club, and citizen racers: Train regularly, race occasionally and desire a top performance ski that won't break the bank. Check out these models: Visu Magnum, Madshus Suprasonic, Fischer SCS, and Rossignol Max Series.
* Juniors: Visu Pro Race Junior skate and classic skis are made with the same materials as the adult models, but in softer flex patterns for kids!

TOURING: Sport/light or rugged. The touring skier likes a variety of of x-c ski experiences! You may want to visit the groomed "tracks" of a nordic center one morning, then ski alone on an ungroomed forest trail in the afternoon! So, you need skis versatile enough to handle the these different venues. For light touring check out the Fischer Superlight Crown, Madshus Lillehammer, and Visu Vision Cap. For more rugged touring, you'll need wider skis so look at the Visu Voyageur and Alpina Tracker.

BACKCOUNTRY: These adventurous skiers like to get away and explore off the beaten path. You ski ungroomed trails, hills, and fields and make your own tracks. The terrain can be as difficult as you want, depending on the snow depth and ruggedness of the venue. Dependable equipment is needed and the skis will have full or 3/4 length steel edges for security in all snow conditions. The skis will need to be at least 62mm wide to float over the snow. Look at these models: Fischer BCX Rebound and Europa 99 Mountain Crown, Visu Cruiser, and Visu Voyageur.

JUNIOR SKIERS: Typically weigh less than 110 lbs. RRS offers young skiers the value-packed Visu Junior models for skating, classical, combi, and touring. They offer all off the high tech features of the adult models. For skating juniors, the Rossignol X-ium Jr. is fast!

TELEMARK: Today, the vast majority of customers wanting Tele equipment are going to alpine ski areas to use it, i.e., lift-served tele skiing. The skis are then single camber with full metal edges, with at least 15mm of sidecut and 80mm wide at the tip. These skis must carve and hold in the turns! Our choice here is easy: Atomic Beta TM22 (available in the retail store only, please call 518-793-5676).

Just what is the difference between an alpine and cross country ski?

Camber of the ski is the answer. Camber is the arch in the base of a ski. It reduces the impact of your weight on the snow. Alpine (or downhill) camber has practically no arch at all. It allows the entire ski base to contact the snow at all times in order to allow the ski to turn. Nordic (x-c) camber does not allow the ski's mid-section to contact the snow when your weight is evenly distributed across both skis, thus reducing drag and increasing glide.

What should I know about ski flexes?

All skis are manufactured with a specific flex or bend. With touring and classic skis, this flex determines how long the kick zone of the ski is, and how much weight is required to push the kick zone into the snow. If the flex is too soft, the skis will drag on the snow. If the flex is too hard, it will be difficult for the skier to push down the kick zone of the ski to get the needed kick. Most of the Atomic, Fischer and Madshus racing skis come in soft, medium, and stiff flexes for classic. For skating skis, soft is not an option - the skis will come medium, hard, or in some cases soft/med and medium/hard. There is always going to be some overlap and subjectivity when selecting the proper ski length for a person's weight and height. Their skiing skill level should be considered too. But weight is by far the most critical factor for touring, classic racing, and backcountry skiing because of the ski's grip zone or central "camber" or flex. A softer flex works best for lighter folks and a stiffer or harder flex for heavier folks. Weight of the skier is just as important when selecting the correct skate ski. A medium flexed skate ski is usually designed for softer snow conditions or skiers with a low weight-to-height ratio (i.e., a man 6'2" but only 142 lbs). A medium flex may also work best for someone with less refined technique because the ski will be more forgiving.

Using the example above and "going by the book", the correct length and flex for a Visu Magnum Race skate would be: medium flex, 193cm. However, I might recommend a hard flex 193cm if he is a strong skier or claims to have great ski technique. This is where the subjectivity factor comes into play with ski selection. So, use the size charts as a guide, and then fine tune to skiing ability and snow conditions. Racing skis are going to have the most overlap and broadest weight ranges; more so than the touring and backcountry skis. This is because of the individual preferences found among racers and the skis. Keep in mind that a certain pair of classic skis that work as an excellent "klister" ski (because of their stiff camber) for a 125 lb. female racer might have the perfect flex to be a "hard" or cold wax pair for a 140 pound skier. With classic, and cold-dry fresh snow, choose a ski at the softer end of the spectrum for hard wax conditions. For old wet snow or hard packed frozen granular, choose a stiffer or harder flex ski. For a ski to perform best for both, select a medium flex model. Most higher end skate skis will come in medium or stiff (hard) flexes and again, a medium flex ski will usually perform better in cold, loosely packed snow while a hard flex is preferred in most normal, harder snow conditions including frozen granular. Most racers prefer a hard flex for skating, except for young skiers - junior high school for example, and skiers with low weight to height ratios (as explained in the previous example). Also, a medium flex may be better for beginners because it is easier for them to press the ski onto the snow in the glide phase, i.e., be somewhat more forgiving.

Is flex testing of skate and classic skis available?

Yes, we have a precise Swiss Point Tester that measures a ski's flex in kilograms. Any pair of racing skis we stock can be flex tested for the customer before purchasing to ensure optimal fit. For skating skis, the desired flex is usually between 85 and 120% of body weight. For classic skis, soft-track, hard-wax flex is around 55 - 75%, while hard-track can be 65 - 75% of body weight. Klister skis should be about 70-90% of the skier's body weight. But, there have been many exceptions to these "rules" proven by World Cup racers!

Do the bases of waxable cross country skis need preparation? If so, how do you do it and what do you need?

All of the cross country racing skis catalogued come directly from the factory with stone ground bases. Here is some instruction on base preparation of new skis. All of the race skis from Atomic, Fischer, and Madshus have stone ground bases that should require no more than some light base scraping and hot waxing before being "put to the snow." Follow the steps outlined below and your new skis should be fast!

1. Gently scrape the top surface with a steel scraper. You are only doing this to remove some of the rough hairs from the stone grinding. By no means do you actually need to scrape material off the base, and there is no need for sanding glide surfaces. "Peeling" of the base is not necessary on new skis that have a quality stone grind. Just gently scrape a few strokes and have confidence in the flatness and finish of the new ski bases.

2. Iron on a layer of soft paraffin wax made for warm temperatures such as Fast Wax Base Prep, Swix Base Prep, or Toko Yellow. Next, scrape off the wax with a plastic scraper before it has a chance to dry. Rub the base with clean fiberlene to get off all of the wet wax. Repeat. Because new bases are usually dirty from handling, this is the best way to clean the base, so be sure to perform this step at least twice (the more the better). Soft, wet wax will not cause the bases to oxidize the way wax remover will. It's important that the bases be clean before you apply the base wax.

3. Iron on a layer of paraffin wax that falls in the middle of that company's temperature range (Fast Wax Red, Toko Red, Swix CH8). Let the wax cool into the base for at least 40 minutes. Scrape with a plastic scraper and then brush with a brass brush, then with a plastic nylon brush, and last with a horsehair brush. For the fastest and easiest mode of brushing get the swix roto brush kit - fitted to a drill, the brushing process is quickened and your arms will stay strong for skiing. As before, repeat this waxing/scraping step twice.

4. Iron on the next cooler/harder wax in the company's range of waxes (Fast Wax Blue, Swix CH6). Again, let it soak in and penetrate the bases for at least 40 minutes, then scrape and brush as above.

5. The final step is to iron one of the really hard cold waxes on your bases. This will allow the base to resist oxidation and give it durability. Good cold waxes are Start Green, Swix CH4, or Fast Wax Green. Again, let the bases cool and then thoroughly scrape and brush.

6. The base prep is now done. The final step for new skis is to apply the right wax and structure for the specific conditions at hand. Why? Because after Step #5 your skis are waxed for very cold snow conditions which may not be the case on the day you decide to ski. Check the temperature, choose your glide wax, drip the melted wax onto your ski's bases with the wax iron, let the skis cool, scrape and brush as described previously.

The steps listed above are for skating skis. For waxing the tip and tail glide zones of classic skis just follow the same steps. Be sure you "rough up" the kick zone of your classic skis with some medium grit (150 or 180) sandpaper, as this will help the grip wax bond better to the base. Place some packing or duct tape over the ski's kick zone when applying glide wax to the tips and tails. You don't want any glide wax getting into the ski's kick or grip zone because it will prevent kick wax from bonding or staying firm to the base.

If you follow the steps above, then wax correctly for the day's conditions, you should have fast skis that hold their wax. Finally, be encouraged because the more your skis are glide waxed over the winter and the bases become saturated with wax, the faster they'll become!!

What is the correct length pole to use for skating and classic techniques?

Skating and classic require different length poles and the difference is usually around 10-15 cm. Most nordic coaches now agree that correct pole length for skating reaches between the chin and upper lip, roughly 90% of your height. To find this number multiply your height in inches times 2.3; now to find classic pole length, subtract from 10-15 cm. The classic-length pole will reach to between the armpit and top of the shoulder. Nordic poles available in 5cm increments.

Can I create my own ski or rollerski package rather than choose one of your pre-selected packages?

Yes, you can choose any compatible skis, boots, poles, and bindings to create your own package, and receive a 10% discount off the total cost of the components. The pre-selected packages have been composed to offer you the best VALUE and savings.

What are "rollerskis" used for?

Rollerskis are a fun way to train for cross country skiing, either skating or classical technique, in the off-season. They should not be purchased to use in training for alpine (downhill) skiing. The rollerski simulates the feel of a racing x-c ski. Most have aluminum frames that flex like a ski, and rubber or polyurethane wheels.

"Classic" and "combi" rollerskis have one set of wheels that are locking or ratcheted, allowing the skier to go only forward without slipping.

"Skating" rollerskis usually have non-locking wheels made of a harder material to counter the more aggresive wheel wear skating creates. Wheel speed varies from brand to brand.

Classic skis tend to be slower and use softer, rubber wheels. But some companies, like V2, offer different wheel speeds - from super slow to very fast. Slow wheel speed means higher resistance, which may be better for hilly terrain and stronger skiers.

A faster rollerski may be more fun initially, but can also be more dangerous (slowing and stopping on rollerskis without speed reduction mechanisms is not as easy as with your snow skis!) Also, rollerskis come without bindings; the skier will use the same boot/binding system (either Salomon or Rottefella) as on their snow skis.

What type of equipment do I need for rollerskiing?

Other than the rollerskis and poles (carbide road tips or ferrules preferred over regular snow baskets), you will need a bike helmet and gloves (Toko makes a rollerski glove).

A helmet and pair of gloves are STRONGLY recommended. Some skiers add elbow, wrist, and knee pads, but that is up to the skier. Keep in mind, all rollerskiers will fall at least once during their road ski careers, so it's wise to be safe.

As stated previously, rollerskis come without bindings or speed reducers, so you'll need to purchase a set of bindings to match your x-c ski boots (please, no 3-Pin's!). Speed reducers are mechanisms that can be added to the front of each ski. They have an adjusting device that applies pressure against the wheel, allowing the skier to "dial-in" a certain speed.

If you are a first-timer, or will use your skis on hilly terrain, speed reducers are recommended (2 are needed). Speed reducers are available only for the V2 rollerskis at this time..

Where can I use rollerskis?

Paved asphalt bike paths and quiet country roads are your best bets. Here in Glens Falls, we're lucky enough to have a paved, 8 mile county bike trail to use (the grade is nice too, because it is a converted "Rails to Trails" path). Most rollerskis are made for pavement, although there are a couple of "off-road" models (Elpex & V2 Aero). The drawback to the off-road models is their higher center of gravity and weight. The advantage is that they open up cinder paths and hard-packed dirt roads to rollerskiing. High-cuff boots are highly recommended, especially with off-road rollerskis. Roads with high traffic should be avoided; sometimes its best to try and ski early in the morning, before anyone is out driving to work. Keep in mind, that with poles flailing, rollerskiers take up quite a bit of space - more than a runner or cyclist. When a car or bike approaches, keep your poles in, close to your body. Regarding HOW to use rollerskis, we suggest you read further on this at the excellent xcskiworld website, http://www.xcskiworld.com/training/rollerguide.htm

Great stories have a personality. Consider telling a great story that provides personality. Writing a story with personality for potential clients will assist with making a relationship connection. This shows up in small quirks like word choices or phrases. Write from your point of view, not from someone else's experience.

Great stories are for everyone even when only written for just one person. If you try to write with a wide, general audience in mind, your story will sound fake and lack emotion. No one will be interested. Write for one person. If it’s genuine for the one, it’s genuine for the rest.
